primary_health_care'Aboriginal concept of health is holistic, encompassing mental health and physical, cultural and spiritual health. Land is central to well-being. This holistic concept does not merely refer to the “whole body” but in fact is steeped in the harmonised interrelations which constitute cultural well-being. These inter-relating factors can be categorised largely as spiritual, environmental, ideological, political, social, economic, mental and physical. Crucially, it must be understood that when the harmony of these interrelations is disrupted, Aboriginal ill health will persist'
- Swan and Raphael, Ways Forward: National Consultancy Report: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Mental Health, 1995

Primary health care is the first point of contact between the community and the health care system. Nggangganawili Aboriginal Health Service’s primary health care programs provide a comprehensive range of clinical, health promotion, early identification and intervention, and social and emotional wellbeing services.

‘International experience has shown that a comprehensive approach to primary health care can contribute to significant improvements in health in developing countries and among Indigenous populations in developed countries comparable to Australia’
- Better Health Care, Australian Government, 2001

To ensure comprehensive primary health care services are available to our community, Nggangganawili Aboriginal Health Service provides:

  • primary clinical care services including acute and accident and emergency care
  • population health programs including immunisation, antenatal care, screening, and health promotion programs
  • facilitated access to secondary and tertiary health services
  • assistance to the community including environmental health, broader lifestyle issues and advocacy

With fully staffed GP clinics operating in both Wiluna and Karalundi, outreach clinical services delivered to the Kutkabubba and Bodini communities, and a 24-7 accident and emergency service, Nggangganawili Aboriginal Health Service plays and integral role in health service provision for the Indigenous and non-Indigenous population in the Central Desert Region.
